Stillwater
40cm x 40cm (unframed)
Mixed media on plywood. Hanging hardware attached.
‘Stillwater’ is inspired by the tidal rock formations found along Sydney’s coastline. I’m particularly drawn to the geometry of these intertidal zones—where the threshold between land and water is constantly shifting.
My practice centres on interpreting the coastal landscape through a process of distillation—simplifying natural forms into stylised compositions that sit between abstraction and representation. This piece began with a photograph I took on a local shoreline, which I then translated into expressive line-work using acrylic ink. Over these outlines, I applied a grit medium to build texture and mimic the tactile quality of eroded stone. Washes of acrylic ink followed, pooling sometimes unpredictably within the grit.
This layering process—part controlled, part intuitive—echoes the influence of water on rock over time. For me, Interlace reflects the quiet drama of the intertidal zone—where land meets sea, permanence meets flux, and structure is shaped by movement. It’s an invitation to pause and notice the intricate forms found in the edges of our everyday landscapes.
Made on Guringai Land in Manly, Australia.
Can be framed upon request. Additional costs apply, allow 3-4 weeks.
